Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle management.
