A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
